Deep coastal blues, nocturnal golds, faces that look like they cost something. The existing Warner Bros. Blu-ray was a catalog disc — competent, forgettable, the kind of thing you rip and move on from. Arrow's new 4K, out this Tuesday, is the first boutique treatment this film has ever had, and the first time it's been scanned from the original 35mm negative. The restored 4.0 and 2.0 stereo options matter here. Prior home video editions defaulted to lossy stereo on a film whose audio design was built around that surround field. The lossless restoration gives it back. AVForums called the presentation "strong lossless" before release, and Blueprint Review (UK) confirmed the scan came straight from the negative. Early impressions on the Dolby Vision grade suggest the nighttime California scenes — the ones Hall built the whole visual identity around — hold up exactly as they should. Arrow's Limited Edition comes with new cast and crew interviews, a documentary, archival materials, and an illustrated booklet. At $35 on sale from $49.99, the timing is deliberate. This is the definitive home video release of a genuinely underrated film, now or likely never. Hall's cinematography is the reason to own it. The Warner disc never did it justice. Based on what they've done with similar material and what early impressions confirm, this is the first time anyone has treated Tequila Sunrise as the visual object it actually is. Buy it. The only genuinely new material is Guillaume Ribot's 2025 documentary All I Had Was Nothingness — 94 minutes of previously unreleased footage from the making of Shoah. The transfer is a 2K digital restoration, same master as the Eureka UK edition. Forum consensus: if you own the prior Criterion, the transfer is not an upgrade. If you own nothing, buy it. Standard HD, no 4K, but Warner Archive's catalog transfers are reliable and this film doesn't get the attention it deserves. Fans of the genuinely peculiar should not wait. Jacques Tourneur directing Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer, Nicholas Musuraca shooting the California coast and Mexican highlands in a way that makes contemporary cinematography look embarrassed. The 2014 Warner Archive Blu-ray held up for a decade. The new 4K scan from the original negative is a generational upgrade — not a marginal one, a real one, because Musuraca's work rewards every bit of resolution and dynamic range the format can carry. Eddie Muller's TCM introduction is a welcome addition for anyone coming to the film fresh. Warner Archive catalog can be harder to find at sale prices later, and the title is in stock now at $22–30\.
