## Forbidden Planet (1956) | Arrow Video Limited Edition 4K UHD

Every prior home video release of this film was wrong. The original MGM 35mm negative was shot in Cinemascope: the 2.55:1 full widescreen canvas. The Warner Blu-ray cropped it. The DVD before it cropped it. For 70 years, anyone watching Forbidden Planet at home has been watching a version that trimmed the frame on both sides.

Arrow went back to the original 35mm negative and restored it. The result is the full 2.55:1 frame: Altair IV stretching all the way to the edges, the Krell machinery filling the screen the way MGM designed it. High Def Digest called the Dolby Vision presentation a terrific first-rate restoration and gave it a Highly Recommended. Collectors on AVS Forum who have been tracking this title for years are calling the framing difference immediately visible and not subtle.

The audio situation is equally significant. Arrow includes three tracks: the restored 3-channel Perspecta stereo in DTS-HD MA 3.0, a DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix, and the original mono. Perspecta was the directional audio system MGM used for this film in 1956, and almost every prior home video release simply omitted it. HDD describes the Perspecta track as dynamite. That is not language they use when they are merely checking a box.

This is one of the most influential science fiction films ever made. Star Trek's DNA runs directly through it. The template for the whole genre was built here: isolated colony, ancient alien civilization, monster from the id, crew trying to figure out what the planet is doing to them. It has never had a disc release that treated it like what it is. Arrow has done that.

Standard Limited Edition (\~$33.99) at Orbit DVD or DeepDiscount. Collector's Box Set (\~$52.75) if you want the full physical package. Pre-order at arrowvideo.com or search Amazon.

**QUICK HITS**

**Go (1999) | Arrow Video Limited Edition 4K UHD | BUY | $31.99**

HDD Highly Recommended. Dolby Vision suits the neon-and-chaos aesthetic exactly. Currently $31.99, nearly $18 off the $49.95 SRP. A Limited Edition on a film that deserves more attention. Buy at Arrow Video store or Amazon.

**Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) | Disney 4K UHD | BUY | \~$24.69**

Robin Williams' first 4K debut. New restored transfer, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos. Forum consensus says warm and film-like, which is the right call. Under $25 for a combo pack. Buy at Amazon.

**Night of the Hunted (2026) | Shudder Blu-ray | BUY (horror fans) | \~$38.99**

Shudder's physical disc debut for their 2026 theatrical horror release. Single location, high tension, early reviews call it effective and lean. Comes with booklet and digital materials. Solid genre pickup for collectors who want Shudder originals on shelf. Buy at Amazon or DeepDiscount.

**Westworld (1973) | Limited Edition 4K UHD | WAIT | $39.49**

Michael Crichton's Yul Brynner robot-cowboy original finally gets a 4K debut. Long overdue. No transfer review has landed yet. Hold at $39.49 until a verdict arrives. Search Amazon day-of for best price.

**Ice Cream Man (1994) | Vinegar Syndrome 4K UHD SteelBook | BUY (horror collectors) | \~$35–$40**

Clint Howard's most unhinged performance finally gets a proper 4K restoration from Vinegar Syndrome, in a SteelBook with booklet, poster, and the Joe Bob Briggs Monstervision episode. No transfer review has landed yet, but VS's cult horror track record is reliable, and this is the release the fanbase has waited for. Buy at vinsyn.com or search Amazon.

**SKIP OF THE WEEK**

### Dead Poets Society (1989) | Disney 4K UHD

Same week, same label, same \~$24.69 as Mrs. Doubtfire. It is the wrong call if you are buying one. The forum thread on the transfer (blu-ray.com, September 18–19) describes a warm, brown-heavy grade that is dividing collectors on whether it represents a meaningful upgrade over the existing 1080p Blu-ray. Doubtfire's jump from 5.1 to Atmos is more immediately audible, and the transfer discussion is more universally positive. Hold until the grade gets a clearer verdict, or until price drops. Buy Mrs. Doubtfire instead.

**LIMITED EDITION ALERT**

![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/e6/46/e6461554-2524-47a1-9ee4-c1bc5554c627/content/images/2026/09/misery_disc_art.jpg)

### Misery (1990) | Arrow Video Limited Edition 4K UHD

Pre-order now. \~$30.49 at iMusic. Street date: September 28–29.

Arrow has done a new 4K restoration from the original 35mm negative of Rob Reiner's Stephen King adaptation. The Kino Lorber 4K that currently exists is a solid disc with no complaints against it. This supersedes it. Arrow's Limited Edition treatment adds a booklet and extras that the KL release does not have, and the new restoration is the reason to own a disc rather than the streaming version. Limited Edition runs do not always reprint at the same tier.

If you already own the KL disc, this is a collector's decision on whether to double-dip. If you don't own Misery on disc at all, the Arrow edition is the one to start with. Pre-order at arrowvideo.com or iMusic.

**BACK CATALOG PICK**

### Thieves Like Us (1974) | Vinegar Syndrome 4K UHD

Robert Altman's quietly devastating Depression-era crime film sits between Nashville and McCabe and Mrs. Miller in quality, and almost nobody talks about it. Shelley Duvall and Keith Carradine are extraordinary in it. The VS 4K sources from a new scan and is the correct version to own. Secondary market pricing hovers around $25–$30 and occasionally dips lower on VS's own site. Hunt at vinsyn.com or Diabolik DVD.

**$50 PICK**

### Go (1999) | Arrow Video Limited Edition 4K UHD | $31.99

The easy call this week. A Limited Edition 4K from one of the most reliable labels in the business, currently on sale at $31.99, nearly $18 below the $49.95 SRP, with a Highly Recommended from High Def Digest, Dolby Vision, and extras including commentary, a collector's booklet, and retrospective materials.

Doug Liman's 1999 rave-era thriller deserves more credit than it gets as a piece of technical filmmaking. Three interlocking storylines, each with a different visual register, all shot in a way that was completely native to its era and looks genuinely revelatory in Dolby Vision. The late-90s neon excess is the point, and Arrow understood that. This is the definitive version of a criminally underrated film at a price that makes it a straightforward call. Buy at deepdiscount.com or the Arrow Video store.
